Erik thinks I’m a top defender, says Maguire

- By CHRIS WHEELER

HARRY MAGUIRE insists he does not have mixed feelings over Manchester United’s success in the Carabao Cup despite only playing a bit-part role in Sunday’s final at Wembley. The United captain was brought on by manager Erik ten Hag in the 88th minute of the 2-0 win over Newcastle before lifting the trophy with Bruno Fernandes. Maguire’s lack of involvement this season suggests he is unlikely to stay beyond the summer, but the England defender dismissed suggestions that this had dampened his enjoyment of winning his first trophy at United since an £80million move from Leicester in 2019.

‘I don’t have any mixed emotions,’ said Maguire. ‘I am club captain and my main job is to move this club forward and to bring success back. ‘Obviously I want to play games and lead the boys out of the tunnel. I also want to contribute to the team. I have a big responsibility on and off the pitch, so it was nice to get on and help the lads. ‘I understand this is part and parcel of football at the top level. We want to win trophies and to do that you need competition for places. The manager tells me honestly. He speaks to me daily and respects me and believes I am a top centre half with all the attributes to play in his team. But he also understands that the players who are playing — and I understand it — are playing very well.

‘It was a proud day for my family who were in the stands to see me lift my first trophy for United.’
