Yearly ‘health MoT’ to boost the economy

- By Tom Witherow Senior Political Correspondent

AN ANNUAL health MoT will be given to workers in a drive to cut effects of long-term sick leave and grow the economy.

Ministers believe regular check-ups, such as blood pressure tests, will prevent middleaged people leaving work.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has made boosting the economy, set to grow at 1 per cent from 2025, one of his key priorities.

GPs will also be able to refer patients with long-term conditions to a new service to assess what work they can do, rather than just being signed off sick.

‘Just like having an annual appraisal, you would have an annual health MoT, which would then be used to direct individuals to the most appropriate place for support,’ a government source told The Sunday Times.
