Province is a puzzle
RISHI SUNAK’S attempt to resolve the northern Ireland protocol highlights the vagueness of who actually governs that part of the United Kingdom.
Northern Ireland has some devolved powers at Stormont, but legislation from London seems to come first.
Now it would appear that some eU legislation has precedence over Westminster and northern Ireland laws. And at times we involve the Dublin government and are even told that U.S. President Joe Biden would not agree with some changes to the Good Friday agreement.
This raises a question: if a considerable body of public opinion in northern Ireland indicates there is a groundswell for it to become an independent state, from whom must they seek approval to hold a referendum to decide the issue?
