RAF sites for hotel migrants
THOUSANDS of migrants currently in hotels could be moved into military bases ‘within weeks’, it has emerged.
The Home Office is negotiating to secure two sites from the Ministry of Defence.
Existing ex-military housing within former RAF bases at Scampton, Lincolnshire, and Wethersfield, Essex, may need refurbishment but could be brought into use ‘within weeks or months’, the source added.
The bases as asylum housing centres would allow ‘a few thousand’ people to be relocated from costly hotels, government sources confirmed.
It emerged in October that hotel costs were at £5.6million a day. Costs are thought to have increased since then as more migrants have arrived.
