What is the point of a Women’s Day?
THE first International Women’s Day was held in March 1911 in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland.
Yesterday, 112 years later, I wondered again what the point is.
Women are suffering the world over. Each year, the MP Jess Phillips reads out in Parliament the names of every woman killed by men in the UK. Last year, there were 127.
In Afghanistan, the universities are open but women are banned. Girls can’t attend school.
One day a year does nothing at all to improve our lot.
