LIONEL MESSI and Paris Saint-Germain were left rueing yet another season of European failure last night after second-half strikes by Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting and Serge Gnabry steered Bayern Munich into the quarter-finals. Trailing 1-0 from last month’s first leg in Paris, PSG were architects of their own downfall on 61 minutes when Marco Verratti was dispossessed inside his own box. Leon Goretzka squared to Choupo-Moting, formerly of Stoke City, and the forward tapped in for his fourth goal in six Champions League appearances this season. Bayern’s biggest scare came in the first half, when Matthijs de Ligt cleared off the line after goalkeeper Yann Sommer was caught on the ball. Julien Nagelsmann’s side sealed a 3-0 victory on aggregate when Serge Gnabry converted a counter-attack in the 89th minute at the Allianz Arena. Messi (above), 35, has not won the Champions League since 2015. It is the fifth time in seven seasons that PSG have been knocked out in the last 16.
