Blue ribbon for stilton pie

IT IS already home to the beloved Melton Mowbray – and a lot more besides.

Now Leicestershire can boast the best pie in the land – as one of the county’s steak, ale and stilton savouries won the top prize at the British Pie Awards.

The winning pie, named Mooand-Blue and made by Leicestershire-based Brockleby’s Pies, ate up competition from more than 900 entries.

The champion was announced yesterday after 150 judges sampled pies with fillings ranging from Marmite and cheese to kebab or lasagne at St Mary’s Church in Melton Mowbray.

Family-run Brockleby’s, which makes more pies in the Melton borough than any other, has added the top award to its more than 30 accolades at the showcase event over the years. Last year’s winner was Pieminister’s gluten-free, vegan Mooless Pie.
