Burnley hit by transfer embargo

- By LEWIS STEELE

have been placed under a transfer embargo by the EFL after submitting their accounts late. The runaway Championship leaders blamed the issue on changing their auditors in November.

The news came 24 hours after Vincent Kompany’s side went 13 points clear at the top with a 3-0 win over WIGAN.

Wigan have delayed paying their players’ wages and boss Shaun Maloney said: ‘It was an emotional couple of days, very difficult.’ MIDDLESBROUGH are just four points off the Championship promotion spots after fighting back to beat SWANSEA 3-1. Chuba Akpom took his goal tally to 22 for the season as his penalty added to goals from Aaron Ramsey and Cameron Archer after Swansea led through Joel Piroe. Boro boss Michael Carrick said: ‘We showed control and were dangerous throughout.

‘I can’t hide from the league table but it doesn’t affect how we approach each game.’ They are now within touching distance of second place after SHEFFIELD UNITED fell to defeat against LUTON, who have 34 away points. Carlton Morris turned in his 15th goal of the season after fine work from Elijah Adebayo. Gareth Ainsworth got his first win as QPR boss in a feisty clash with WATFORD via Tim Iroegbunam’s goal.

‘It’s a real big moment for me,’ said Ainsworth.

His opposite number Chris Wilder, who lost his first match as Watford manager after taking over last Tuesday, said: ‘We weren’t creative enough or brave enough.’
