Anger as freed Glitter is filmed ‘ looking for dark web’

SHAMED pop star gary glitter was recalled to jail last night after allegedly being caught trying to access the ‘dark web’ just a month after being freed.

The paedophile, 78, was seen browsing on a smartphone in a bail hostel, breaking the licence conditions of his release.

He was filmed staring at the screen saying he was trying to find ‘the Onion’, a term for the infamous online realm which is used by paedophiles and other criminals as it is hard to monitor or trace users.

The sex offender was freed last month after serving half a 16-year term imposed in 2015 for sexually abusing girls aged under 13 during his pop heyday in the 1970s.

Now glitter, real name Paul gadd, will have to face a Parole Board hearing to determine if he is fit to be released.

The prison recall followed calls for action after publication of a video obtained by The Sun on Sunday in which he says: ‘So what do I do next? Let’s try and find this Onion.’

Former home secretary Priti Patel had said glitter should be sent back to jail, adding: ‘This is very shocking and makes you feel sick.’

Ex-justice secretary robert Buckland, KC, had urged the Ministry of Justice to take ‘swift action’.

Last night glitter left the bail hostel in the south of England just after 6pm in an unmarked police car escorted by a police van. He hid in the back using a blanket as cover.

His strict licence conditions included restrictions on internet use, wearing a tag and telling police if he enters into a relationship with someone with a child under 18. glitter had also been told to inform officers seven days before any foreign travel.

He was jailed in Vietnam in 2006 for sexually abusing two girls and previously in Britain for four months in 1999 after 4,000 child abuse images were found on his computer.

Last night a Probation Service spokesman said: ‘Protecting the public is our number one priority.

‘That’s why we set tough licence conditions and when offenders breach them, we don’t hesitate to return them to custody.’
