Killer gas blast leaves street in ruins

- By James Tozer

A MAN died and three other people were wounded yesterday after a suspected gas blast devastated a terraced street.

The massive morning explosion destroyed two houses in Swansea. Police confirmed that a search had located the body of the victim named locally as Brian Davies, who was in his 60s.

He moved in more than two years ago and was described as ‘quiet but friendly and nice’.

One neighbour said: ‘We were praying that he would be found alive. But he stood no chance in that explosion. It is terrible.’

A teenage boy was helped out of the ruins by neighbours who went in to rescue his mother despite the strong smell of gas. Resident Christopher Yeoman, 55, said: ‘Everything shook. I ran into the street and we got a boy out, and me and another neighbour ran in because we could hear a woman shouting.’ A man who was also inside the house is feared to have lifethreatening injuries and was flown to hospital.

Gas engineers were last night investigating the blast which damaged at least 20 houses.
