Beatle’s note of penance
A LETTER of apology written by George Harrison after two autograph-hunting schoolgirls got a distinctly unfriendly reception when they turned up at his home in Surrey is expected to make several thousand pounds when it goes to auction today.
The handwritten letter is part of some early Beatles memorabilia that turned up out of the blue.
James Laverack, of auctioneers John Taylors, in Louth, Lincolnshire, says one of the girls died recently: ‘During the clearance of her home, the extraordinary little cache of Beatles memorabilia was discovered.’
In 1964, she and a friend had gone to the Mop Top’s new pad in Esher, which was near their school, hoping for an autograph. But a distinctly unimpressed ‘home help’ who answered the door sent them on their way and phoned the school to complain.
When George found out about it the following day, he sent the mother of one of the girls the letter apologising for the way they had been treated.
