that’s the theory behind a new trial at the University of medicine and Pharmacy in Bucharest, romania, where around 50 people with knee osteoarthritis will have their synovial fluid (the thick liquid that helps cushion the joint) examined for microplastics — fragments of plastic less than 5 mm in length.

microplastics have previously been found in the lungs, gut and blood and have been linked to higher levels of inflammation. sources of microplastics include synthetic textiles, plastic bags and bottles, and car tyres.
