IN AT THE DEEP END: Aged 20, i left Britain to work in an insurance office in Basel. my treat was to buy the Daily mail each Saturday. imagine my shock to see an article on November 5, 1960, about a flood in Lewes, East Sussex — the picture showed Spences Lane with my parents’ home at the top.

Here are my mum and dad keeping a brave face in their flooded lounge (left). Sadly, the house did not recover from the water damage, so they joined me in Switzerland.
