Baldrick’s back... with a great, red (tomato) nose

- By Emma Powell Deputy Showbusiness News Editor

IT was always going to take a cunning plan to get Baldrick back on TV. And last night Sir Tony Robinson, 76, finally reprised his iconic Blackadder role for a Comic Relief skit.

The turnip-loving Baldrick shared a bedtime story about the ancient origins of an annual fundraising initiative to tackle poverty:‘Stick-half-a-red-tomatoon

The five- minute clip saw Baldrick telling viewers the tale of ‘Balderella’ – about one man’s cunning plan to go to a ‘magnificent ball’ and have a ‘little snog’ with a princess.

But the plan backfires and he’s sent back to live with Blackadder when he accidentally kills his love interest with his rotting feet. Rowan Atkinson, who played Edmund Blackadder in the BBC series, didn’t feature but continued to bash his dogsbody in Baldrick’s retelling.

A host of celebrities threw their support behind this year’s Comic Relief, which was cofounded in 1985 by Blackadder creator Richard Curtis.

Dame Joan Collins, 89, stripped down to her stockings to encourage people to donate, claiming that her husband ‘insisted’ she post the picture on Instagram.

Hosted by AJ Odudu and Joel Dommett, last night’s show was also set to see Dame Mary Berry, Dawn French and Jennifer Saunders join Claudia Winkleman for a parody of The Traitors, with Kylie Minogue set to appear in BBC comedy Ghosts.
