READER’S QUESTION

-

WHAT can I plant in between paving stones?

Sarah King, Southampton. Planting in the cracks between paving stones gives a romantic, softening effect. There are plenty of robust, but small, flowers that work well.

Creeping thyme ( Thymus serpyllum) is an evergreen shrub, with fragrant clusters of

purple blooms that don’t grow much beyond 10cm high, while chamomile ( Chamaemelum nobile) is a perennial with daisy-like flowers reaching 25cm.

Mexican fleabane ( Erigeron karvinskianus) is a pink and white daisylike flower. Some people like the tiny leaves of mind-your-own-business ( Soleirolia soleirolii), but it can be a thug.

Mix seeds with compost, press into the cracks and water well.
