Hamilton parts with trainer after seven years

- JONATHAN McEVOY

LEWIS HAMILTON has suddenly parted company with trainer Angela Cullen.

The two had been inseparable for seven years and even spent lockdown on the road together in the driver’s motorhome. Adding to a sense of puzzlement in the paddock is that the New Zealand performance coach was with Hamilton in Bahrain only a fortnight ago.

Both issued statements before practice at the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix to announce the ostensibly amicable split. Hamilton said: ‘For the last seven years Angela has been by my side, pushing me to be the best version of myself.

‘I am a stronger athlete and better person because of her. I wish her the very best as she takes the next steps to pursue her dreams.

‘Thank you for everything Ang. I can’t wait to see what the future has in store for you.’ The 48-year-old Cullen, a mother of two, said in even more gushing terms: ‘Exactly seven years ago I was standing in the F1 paddock for the first time at the Australian GP. Today I’m excited to share that I’m off on my next adventure. I am so grateful to have had this incredible journey in F1 and I know my story will continue. ‘And Lewis Hamilton you GOAT! It’s been such an honour and pleasure to stand alongside you. Thank you for showing me the limitless potential we all have. I am so excited to watch the next chapter. There’s nothing you can’t do.’ Cullen, a former hockey player, attended to Hamilton’s every concern, carrying his umbrella and even handing him his lint roller, as well as overseeing his training.
