THE most exciting moment in the life of schoolboy film star Christian Bale was meeting the Queen at last night’s royal premiere of Empire Of The Sun. Christian, a 14-year- old from Bournemout­h, plays the young hero of the film. He was presented to the Queen when he joined a line-up of big names, including actors Nigel Havers and Miranda Richardson.

MARCEL MARCEAU (1923-2007). The French mime star (pictured) shot to fame as Bip, the sad, white-faced clown with a wilting flower. His Jewish father died in Auschwitz and Marceau said: ‘People who came back from [death] camps couldn’t speak, didn’t know how to recount [their ordeal]. I am Jewish. Perhaps that counted in my choice of silence, unconsciou­sly.’ KARL MALDEN (1912-2009). Born Mladen Sekulovich, the American actor starred opposite Marlon Brando in On The Waterfront and A Streetcar Named Desire, for which he won a Best Supporting Actor Oscar. But he insisted he was probably best known for a series of ads for American Express travellers’ cheques, with the catchphras­e: ‘ Don’t leave home without them.’
