Biden makes fresh anti-British swipe

- By David Churchill Chief Political Correspondent

JOE Biden sparked fresh ‘antiBritish’ allegations yesterday after saying his recent visit to Ireland was to ensure that Rishi Sunak did not ‘screw around’ over the latest Brexit deal.

The US President made the admission during a bizarre rant about his mother, who was Irish, at a fundraiser for his bid to secure another White House term next year.

Before Mr Biden’s four-day visit to Ireland last month to mark the 25th anniversary of the Good Friday agreement, he told reporters his priority was to ‘keep the peace’ in northern Ireland. But he was criticised for spending only a fraction of his time in Ulster, instead spending most of it in the Republic.

Former DUP leader arlene Foster said ahead of the US President’s visit that he is ‘seen by so many people to be simply pro-republican and pro-nationalist’. at Wednes stolen day’s Democratic national Committee reception in new York, Mr Biden, 80, said: ‘and she [his mother] was a sweet woman, and butter wouldn’t melt in her mouth except if you crossed one of her kids.

‘all kidding aside, the basic fundamental values that I find is that most ethnic communities are similar... I got to go back to Ireland for the Irish accords, to make sure they weren’t — the Brits didn’t screw around and northern Ireland didn’t walk away from their commitments.’

Post-Brexit trading processes for northern Ireland, called the Windsor Framework, were adopted by the UK and EU in March.

But the DUP has not dropped its opposition or returned to power sharing in Stormont. of Mr Biden’s comments, DUP MP Sammy Wilson said: ‘It’s unbelievable and frightening to think this is the man who is the leader of the free world.

‘If you believe that there should be a special relationship between the US and UK then at least show us some respect.’
