COMPLETE, fully-equipped kitchens are to be provided for every school, and the Government will pay for them, announced Mr Rab Butler, President of the Board of Education, yesterday. The aim, he said, is to provide a hot midday meal for practically every child, something which will be safeguarded even if rations are cut.

Wojtyla in Poland, he became pope in 1978 — the first non-Italian pontiff for more than 455 years. In 1981, in St Peter’s
Square, he was seriously wounded when he was shot by Turkish extremist Mehmet Ali Agca, whom he later visited and forgave. Pope John Paul II was declared a saint in 2014.
