THE GREAT BRITISH SEWING BEE, 9PM, BBC1

-

FAMILY SECRETS Maryland, 9pm, ITV1

AS THE sisters start to come to terms with their mother’s secret life, the revelations have sparked a change in both women, with Becca (Suranne Jones) having a few angry words with her husband, Jim (Andrew Knott), when he arrives on the Isle of Man — followed by the sisters’ father, Richard (George Costigan), who makes a surprise appearance. Rosaline (Eve Best), meanwhile, is getting closer to that bearded taxi driver (Dean Lennox Kelly, pictured with Best), who shows the uptight high-achiever how to let go. This concluding episode of the three-part relationship drama wraps things up tidily, as long-standing resentments and more family secrets are brought into the open.

THE Bee is back as 12 home sewing supremos bound into the studio, stuffed to the seams with hope and optimism. How long before the pressure mounts and they start getting ruffled? Sara Pascoe returns as host, delivering some much less obvious and cheesy puns, while Esme Young once again has no choice but to get neck strain next to six-feet-plus Patrick Grant, as the judging duo (pictured with Pascoe). It’s an exceedingly goodnatured competition all round and, as ever, these early stages are about getting to know the contestants, as conversation turns to gussets and French seams, and we find out who can sew under pressure and who can stitch in time. There are already some standouts as the contest gets under way. The pattern challenge is a top with a literal twist, followed by a task to transform a bland corporate outfit into something that does not belong in an office. The final, made-to-measure challenge sees the contestants working with live models to create a cutout dress — that’s right, a dress with a hole that won’t be totally unseemly.
