SIR FRANK WHITTLE (1907-1996). The Coventry-born inventor of the jet engine made his breakthrou­gh in 1928. He started out as a RAF test pilot; he made ‘pancake’ landings on the sea to test flotation bags, but didn’t let on that he couldn’t swim.
