WHAT TO WEAR THIS WEEKEND

JAZZY TROUSERS

A SHIrT and trousers is hardly a novel fashion trend

— but this look proves execution is everything. With a couple of minor twists you can turn wardrobe basics into a superlatively stylish ensemble.

The latest trick is to dress down your top and dress up your bottom. You’ll need an oversized shirt that’s casual in cut and cloth. The trousers need to be a serious statement. Something wide-legged, in a block bright colour. It’s failsafe.

EYE-POPPING BRIGHTS

You’LL struggle to find a better destination for beautifully designed trousers than ME+EM. I know you’re thinking Kermit green is too loud — but in a cut this wearable, there is no hue too startling.

If you’re still not sure, there’s a slightly more muted green at Jigsaw, a bright pink at reiss, bright red at Boden and a mustard yellow at Joseph at The outnet. Jazzy trousers are massively on trend so you’re spoiled for choice.

TONE DOWN THE TOP

To rEALLY pull this off, you should ensure that the shirt, shoes and accessories are more muted. I’d suggest a linen shirt that will look creased and lived in moments after you put it on — which I love and will also undercut the formality of the trousers. An alternative is this navy number in organic hemp, from shirt brand of the moment With Nothing underneath. It’s got a casual texture and relaxed silhouette, without the full rumpled appearance of linen.

KEEP THINGS SIMPLE

IF You get it right this look is all at once smart and neat, with an effortless ‘oh this old thing’ vibe — nothing looks worse than trying too hard after all. Keep accessories simple, rather than trying to match your trousers. This navy bag from Jasper Conran is lizard- effect leather and can be worn on your shoulder or across the body.
