Fresh tragedy for Tetra Pak billionaire as second wife dies

- By Piriyanga Thirunimalan

BILLIONAIRE philanthropist Hans Rausing has been hit with a new tragedy after the death of his second wife to cancer.

Julia Rausing passed away peacefully yesterday morning surrounded by her family, it was revealed last night.

The 63-year-old had dedicated herself to a life of philanthropy along with her husband. The couple donated £330 million in more than 1,000 grants, including £50 million to UK charities annually, through the Julia and Hans Rausing Trust.

The Tetra Pak heir’s first wife, Eva, died of a drug overdose in 2012. Mr Rausing received a suspended ten-month jail term after he hid her body in a bedroom at their £70 million Belgravia mansion for two months, preventing her ‘decent and lawful burial’ because he couldn’t ‘let her leave’.

He married Julia Delves Broughton two years later. A senior director of auction house Christie’s, she was the sister of fashionista Isabella Blow. Their grandfather, Sir Jock Delves Broughton, was sensationally acquitted of murdering the Earl of Erroll in the

Mr Rausing said yesterday: ‘My beloved wife, Julia, dedicated her life to her family and charitable causes, and she will be missed by all who knew her. She leaves behind an extraordinary legacy across many charities, which we will continue in her name.’

The Rausings were leading forces in fundraising during the pandemic.

They provided an £18 million ‘lifeline’ for small and medium charities under the Charity Survival Fund in 2020, as well as £16.5 million for other Covid causes, including a £1 million donation to the Daily Mail’s Mail Force campaign.
