sOME villages are unmistakab­ly upper class, from schools with impressive links to Oxbridge to thatched cottages and artisan High Streets. little wonder, they’re a pull for house-hunters with deep pockets.

Here, we round up ten of the nation’s poshest villages . . .

Barrington, Cambs

THIS village has one of the longest greens in Europe, at 22 acres, according to its parish council. Edged by thatched cottages, there’s a pub and it’s an easy commute to Cambridge.

Dirleton, E. Lothian

DaTING back to the 12th century, Dirleton is famed for its castle. according to estate agent liam Gretton, the area attracts affluent locals, retirees and holiday homeowners. ‘Prices range from £400,000 for traditiona­l cottages to more than £2.5 million for larger homes.’

Scarcroft, W. Yorks

KEY to Scarcroft’s posh appeal is its equestrian vibe, thanks to the Hellwood Racing Stables and a riding centre at Scarcroft Hall. There’s also a good primary school.

Caldy, Merseyside

CalDY is well-known for its large homes and breathtaki­ng views of the River Dee and

Welsh hills. Nearby schools include Calday Grange Grammar, attended by James Bond actor Daniel Craig.

Alderley Edge, Cheshire

THIS enchanting village sits within what’s known as the Cheshire Golden Triangle. ‘alderley Edge has become a favourite to call home by footballer­s and TV stars for its high- end shops and homes,’ says liam Gretton.

Shipton Moyne, Gloucs

West Kilbride, N. Ayrs
