JOHNNY BALL, 86. The TV presenter from Bristol hosted Play School and Think Of A Number. In 2012, aged 74, he was the oldest contestant on Strictly Come Dancing — he fractured his partner Aliona Vilani’s ankle after taking a ‘misstep’ during rehearsals.

DAME JOAN COLLINS, 91. The londonborn actress starred in The Stud and The Bitch, with both films based on novels by her late sister Jackie. One of the last surviving stars from the Hollywood Golden Age, she has worked opposite Paul Newman and Richard Burton.

BORN ON THIS DAY

ROBERT MOOG (1934-2005). The U.S. engineer invented the Moog electronic synthesise­r, crucial to creating the sound of the 1960s and 1970s. It was used by The Beatles and Rolling Stones, and in films including A Clockwork Orange.

HUMPHREY LYTTELTON (1921-2008). The jazz musician and broadcaste­r was born and educated at Eton, where his father was a master. ‘Humph’ was hailed by louis Armstrong as Britain’s top trumpeter. He chaired Radio 4’s I’m Sorry I Haven’t A Clue for 37 years — he died three weeks after recording his last show.
