Kompany closes on Bayern job

- By JACK GAUGHAN

VINCENT KOMPANY was last night on the verge of sensationally switching from Burnley to Bayern munich.

The 38-year- old manager has remained in demand, despite just five victories all season and relegation from the premier league.

Bayern’s search for Thomas Tuchel’s successor has seen Xabi Alonso, Julian nagelsmann and ralf rangnick all turn them down.

The German giants even tried to tempt Tuchel into staying after announcing his departure three months ago, but talks failed to prompt a change of heart.

now Bayern have turned to Kompany and held discussions with Burnley chairman Alan pace over compensation yesterday, in the hope of wrapping up a deal in the coming days.

The Belgian, who spent two seasons at hamburg before joining manchester city in 2008, speaks fluent German and his philosophy has impressed Bayern’s hierarchy.

it is, however, a gamble for both sides after disappointing campaigns. Bayern failed to win the Bundesliga for the first time since 2012, while Kompany — linked with Tottenham and chelsea last year — saw his reputation take a hit with a 19th-place finish.

The Bayern development is also a significant blow to pace, who had hoped Kompany would spearhead another promotion charge.

Burnley’s board had shown him a sizeable amount of faith and deferred a lot of power, particularly in the recruitment department.

But that did not prevent Kompany from overseeing relegation after spending in excess of £90million last summer.

The clarets were so convinced he would stay that they have been looking at sourcing a new coach to work under him. Ashley cole, currently at Birmingham, is one name they identified. he has impressed with England’s Under 21s.

Kompany’s impending departure represents a considerable problem for Burnley, who will have to sell players in the coming weeks before their return to the championship.

James Trafford could be the first, with newcastle interested in the goalkeeper.
