Our front page reported that 12,500 people went for just 60 jobs at Birmingham’s new £60 million airport. Phone lines became jammed as people vied for jobs as baggage handlers, cleaners, porters and ground staff.

17 YEARS AGO (2000)

GP Harold Shipman was jailed for life for murdering 15 patients. An inquiry concluded Shipman may have killed up to 250 patients over two decades.

56 YEARS AGO (1961)

A chimp called Ham sent into space to test conditions for a manned flight was found alive and well 400 miles from the rocket launch site in Florida.
