ON THIS DAY 77 YEARS AGO (1940)

Our front page announced that RAF Hurricanes and Spitfires had downed 14 Luftwaffe planes and badly damaged 23 more on what British historians now recognise as the first day of the Battle of Britain.

30 YEARS AGO (1987)

First World War veterans returned to Passchenda­ele in Belgium to mark the 70th anniversar­y of the bloodiest battles of the war that claimed the lives of half a million.

26 YEARS AGO (1991)

Labour MP Terry Fields was sentenced to 60 days in jail for refusing to pay his £373 poll tax bill. The former firefighte­r and left-wing MP for Liverpool Broadgreen was a fierce critic of Margaret Thatcher’s tax. He was expelled from Labour in December, 1991, for being a member of banned group Militant.

She is president of the charity, Campaign for National Parks. Guitarist Richie Sambora is 58. He left Bon Jovi after 30 years in 2013. And many happy returns to Mirror reader Kath Harkness from Preston, Lancs, who turns 70 today.
