Cave Story+

-

Adapted from the original Cave Story platformadventure video game released for the PC in 2004, Cave Story+ for Nintendo Switch has you playing as Quote, a robot boy who wakes up in a cave suffering from amnesia. Soon, you discover a village of peaceful rabbit-like Mimigas are at threat of extinction from an evil force that wishes to use them for its own destructive means.

Along your journey to rescue the Mimigas and rediscover your past, you’ll come across many instantly lovable characters, such as Curly Brace, Balrog and King. The game features some truly masterful design – from its catchy soundtrack to its level design – but there are flaws too, like the inability to skip dialogue when restarting a section, and at times the storyline is hard to follow.

It’s a perfect fit for the Nintendo Switch, but it’s been available for free on the PC for many years and some will find the £40 price tag hard to swallow.

But despite the smartphone’s premium features, it feels somehow dated. The hard edges along the top and bottom give it a boxy appearance, and the mirrored glass back makes it slippery and difficult to hold with one hand. While the camera and display are undoubtedly huge selling points, Sony’s unconventional design choices may mean it struggles to compete with Android rivals like the Samsung Galaxy S8.
