Transplant saved me .. let Max’s Law give everybody a chance

Lung swap girl backs our organ donor call

- BY JEREMY ARMSTRONG

A DOUBLE lung transplant patient is urging Theresa May to save lives by bringing in Max’s Law on organ donation.

Josie Stewart, 24, became so ill with cystic fibrosis that her mum became her full-time carer and she had to use a wheelchair.

A year on from her life-changing operation, she has got her independence back and will soon be heading to university to study fashion.

Backing the Mirror’s Change the Law for Life campaign, Josie said: “In an ideal world everybody would sign up to the register. But the sad fact is that most people just do not get around to it, even if they do support it, and that means far less donors.

“I have signed up for the register just in case – you never know.”

The Mirror wants a law change so people are assumed to be potential organ donors unless they opt out.

HEART

Our poster boy Max Johnson, nine, has been waiting six months for a new heart. The youngster, of Winsford, Cheshire, has begged Mrs May: “Please change the law to save me.” Josie, of Sidcup, South East London, added: “I am sure a change in the law would save lives.

“If you are against it, you can always opt out. The donor family has transformed my life.”

There are 6,335 desperately ill people waiting for a donor. Labour MP Geoffrey Robinson will deliver a parliamentary bill to bring in an opt-out scheme in September.

More than 9,600 have signed our petition, with thousands more joining the organ donor register after we published Max’s story.
