- BY ADAM ASPINALL

THE hellish heatwave that has ravaged Europe is set to bring some pleasantly warm weather to the UK.

Lucifer has wreaked havoc on the Continent, killing at least five people and causing raging forest fires.

But it will bring a moderate heatwave to the UK at the weekend, with the mercury hitting the high 20Cs, breaking the current streak of unsettled weather.

With temperatures reaching record highs of 47C in southern Europe, Lucifer has engulfed countries including Spain, Croatia and Italy. Wildfires have swept regions, with 5,000 hectares destroyed on the French island of Corsica alone.

Forecasters say the stifling conditions there will ease this week as weather patterns shift in northern Europe, bringing a hot spell to the UK. Forecaster Marco Petagna said: “The southeast will be mostly fine on Monday before persistent rain moves in on Tuesday and Wednesday.

“We could see heavy downpours in parts, with the risk of gales along the east coast of England and Scotland.

“A small ridge of high pressure will build on Thursday but on Friday we expect further spells of rain.”

Holidaymakers planning to escape this week should prepare for turmoil as delays continue at European airports due to stricter border checks.

Further industrial action is expected at El Prat airport in Barcelona today, with more strikes at the weekend and possibly an all-out strike next Monday.
