Our front page reported that the Americans had dropped the world’s first atomic bomb on the Japanese port of Hiroshima. It did as much damage as five 1,000-plane air raids. President Harry Truman warned Japan to accept terms of surrender.

41 YEARS AGO (1976)

Viking 2 went into orbit around Mars as part of NASA’S mission to discover more about the Red Planet. It was intended to send back photos of suitable landing sites. It worked until July 1978.

14 YEARS AGO (2003)

Terrorist Amrozi bin Nurhasyim was convicted and sentenced to death for his part in the bombing of two nightclubs on Bali in October 2002. The attacks killed 202 people, including tourists. Two more members of Jemaah Islamiyah, a violent Islamist group, were also sentenced to death by firing squad.
