We reported the death at the age of 82 of American steel magnate Andrew Carnagie. After selling his company for $480million in 1901, he became a philanthro­pist giving away $350million of his fortune – the equivalent of $77billion today.

53 YEARS AGO (1964)

Great Train Robber Charlie Wilson, 32, was sprung from Winson Green Prison in Birmingham by three men who broke into the jail and over-powered guards.

32 YEARS AGO (1985)

A Japan Airlines jumbo jet crash landed on a remote mountainsi­de 70 miles from Tokyo. All 509 passengers, mostly holidaymak­ers, died, along with 15 crew. It remains the deadliest crash ever involving a single aircraft.
