5-MONTH ULSTER DEAL FOR LEALIIFANO
ULSTER chief Les Kiss has hailed the signing of Australian out-half Christian Lealiifano on a short-term deal.
Lealiifano has signed a five-month contract until the end of the Champions Cup pool stages on January 22 when he will return to the Brumbies for the start of the Super Rugby season. The 29-year-old (left), who has won 19 caps for the Wallabies, will fill the gap left by Paddy Jackson who has been stood down from playing duties pending legal proceedings.
Lealiifano was diagnosed with leukaemia 12 months ago but has successfully undergone treatment and made a return to action for the Brumbies in June. Director of rugby Kiss (inset) said: “This is a massive boost as we approach the start of the season. “It was paramount we signed an experienced player to give us another option at fly-half and this is a fantastic solution.
“Christian has the playing talent, leadership ability and personality to make a big impact.
“He has overcome significant challenges in his career and that is testament to his bravery and strong character.”
Kiss hopes Lealiifano’s arrival will help the development of No10 prospects Peter Nelson, Brett Herron, Johnny Mcphillips and Callum Smith. He added: “We’re excited by the influence he’ll have on our young fly-halves. We also have two exciting players in our Academy – Michael Lowry and Angus Curtis – who will also have a fantastic opportunity to learn.
“Speaking to Christian, I know he is very excited by the challenge and is looking forward to joining up.”
Lealiifano hopes to be available for the new Pro14 season which kicks off at home to the Toyota Cheetahs on September 1.
