Our front page revealed that Korean Airlines Flight 007 had been shot down by Russian MIG fighters with the loss of all 269 lives. The Soviets mistook the airliner for a US spy plane when it violated Russian airspace.

72 YEARS AGO (1945)

Japanese officials signed the document of unconditio­nal surrender on board the US battleship Missouri in Tokyo Bay. According to the terms, it was forced to recognise the authority of US General Douglas Macarthur.

23 YEARS AGO (1994)

Record Breakers presenter Roy Castle died from lung cancer aged 62. He had never smoked but believed he contracted the disease after years of playing trumpet in smoky jazz clubs.
