(Ferguson) and then big Davy took over and he changed the whole atmosphere of the place, and I wasn’t surprised they did so well last season because everybody knows what Davy and Bryan (Mcloughlin) are like, they are born winners. “I would have loved to have been part of it but it’s got to the stage now where I need to be playing football, I’m the wrong side of 30 so I only have so many years left and I might as well enjoy it.
“I’m at a club now where things are looking up so hopefully at the end of the season we’ll be able to celebrate some success.”
Mcvey has once again been reunited with his old team-mate Darren Henderson.
The pair came through the ranks together at Coleraine, and were at Ballymena together too, before putting pen to paper for the Ports a few days apart over the summer.
He’ll be a familiar face in unfamiliar surroundings, not that Mcvey needed any help in settling in, with the central defender made to feel welcome from day one.
“Since I’ve been there, I’ve been surprised at how the community is so behind the team,” said Mcvey.
“They had a fun day there in July and the whole place was buzzing.
“And the whole atmosphere has been good, everyone knows Portadown are a big club and they should still be in the Premiership.
“But it is what it is, we’re in the Championship now but we want to go straight back up again. We want that and I think the whole of Portadown wants that, that’s where Portadown belong.”
