Our front page asked the question on everyone’s lips after the death of Princess Grace of Monaco in a car crash. There were rumours, later proved false, that daughter Stephanie, then 17, was driving it illegally.

39 YEARS AGO (1978)

An earthquake measuring 7.7 on the Richter scale struck south eastern Iran, levelling the town of Tabas and killing an estimated 26,000 people.

40 YEARS AGO (1977)

T-rex star Marc Bolan was killed in a car crash, aged 29. His girlfriend, US singer Gloria Jones, who was driving the Mini, survived the smash which happened at an accident blackspot in Barnes, South West London. Two days later burglars broke into their home and stole most of Bolan’s possession­s.
