LEGENDS IN A GRAND FINALE Burrow and Mcguire heading to Old Trafford

LIAM SUTCLIFFE struck to give Leeds legends Danny Mcguire and Rob Burrow the perfect departing stage at Old Trafford next Saturday.

Centre Sutcliffe scored the decisive try in another titanic Super League semi-final that went right down to the wire.

It proved just enough to edge a thrilling battle and book a Grand Final showdown with Castleford.

Challenge Cup winners Hull battled back from an early 12-0 deficit to lead inside the final quarter.

Any notions Leeds would be dominated in the same manner they were in the Challenge Cup semi-final between the clubs were extinguished in the opening stages.

With Mcguire and Matt Parcell orchestrating them superbly, they barely allowed the visitors out of their own half in establishing a 12-0 lead.

Stevie Ward opened the scoring by running through Danny Houghton to score by the posts.

Brad Singleton had a try ruled out for a Mcguire forward pass, but there was nothing wrong with the veteran half-back’s creativity moments later. Taking the ball from a standing start on the last tackle, Mcguire stepped the Hull defence and sent sub Anthony Mullally over with his first touch after emerging from the bench.

Lee Radford’s side had struggled for possession and position, but gradually found a foothold in the game and were back within a score by the break.

Albert Kelly was held up over the line by an outstanding Watkins’ cover tackle.

But soon after skipper Gareth Ellis crashed onto a perfect pass from Houghton to make it 12-6 at half-time.

The gap was just four soon after the restart following the first moment of magic from Jake Connor. The Hull centre took a wide pass, got his arms free and produced a sublime offload for Mahe Fonua to score.

The Black and Whites were in the ascendancy, but they needed a massive minute for it to remain that way.

First, Leeds prop Singleton was ruled to have been held up over the line after a rampaging run and a video referee decision.

In the next set of six Hull marched downfield where Connor stepped forward again, flicking a Marc Sneyd kick into the arms of Sika Manu to score and give his side the lead for the first time.

But it lasted just seven minutes before Sutcliffe hit back – and Leeds hung on.
