Union fury at Mcalpine Big Ben millions
UNION Unite has backed a call by 60 MPS to strip building firm Sir Robert Mcalpine of the contract to restore Big Ben.
Unite said it was “grossly inappropriate” that a company being sued for blacklisting should win a contract worth £61million.
The Information Commissioner raided the offices of the Consulting Association in 2009 and found a blacklist of 3,000 construction workers.
Mcalpine helped found and fund the blacklister.
Howard Beckett, of Unite, said: “It is a stain on our democracy that a firm with a history of blacklisting should be awarded such a contract.”
Mcalpine has said its links to blacklisting “are firmly in the past”.
