Archer: The Tories can’t beat Corbyn
Peer’s fears if election held in 2018
JEFFREY Archer believes the Conservatives will lose the general election if it is called next year.
The ex-tory deputy chairman said people are “sick” of voting and claimed his party, struggling under Theresa May, “couldn’t win at the moment”.
Lord Archer, 77, added: “All I can predict, with the air and genius of knowledge, is if we have an election in 2018 the Conservatives will lose it.
“Jeremy Corbyn is riding on a high, I don’t know how long that will last, that will be interesting.”
Reflecting on this year’s snap general election, he claimed Mr Corbyn ran a “brilliant campaign”. And he labelled Labour’s message of For The Many Not The Few “one of the best political slogans” in his lifetime.
On US politics, the writer believes a Hollywood star, such as Angelina Jolie or George Clooney, will take on President Donald Trump at the next election. But he called the blurring of lines between celebrities and politicians “frightening”. Lord Archer was forced to stand down at Tory London Mayor candidate in 1999 when it emerged he had lied 12 years earlier in a libel case, for which he was jailed. The actress, 48 – married to Michael Douglas, 73, for 17 years – was at a gala in LA. Her mum-in-law Anne, 98, and stepson Cameron, 38, were also there. She said: “It’s going to be a really fun family night.” Kirk turns 101 next month.
