MAN ACCUSED OF RAPE ‘ROAMED THE STREETS’

Court told 41yr-old attacked pair and held woman at flat

A MAN charged with raping two women allegedly roamed the streets at night seeking vulnerable people for sex, a court heard yesterday.

Turkish national Orhan Kibar, 41, is accused of attacking the pair and imprisonin­g one of them at the weekend.

He appeared before Belfast Magistrate­s’ Court charged with three counts of rape and false imprisonme­nt.

He allegedly committed the offences after meeting the two women early on Saturday and taking them to his flat.

The accused, of Claremont Street in the south of the city, spoke through an interprete­r to confirm he understood the FAMILIES of victims and survivors of Troubles atrocities protested yesterday against a proposed statute of limitation­s for killings in the conflict.

Relatives of people killed at Loughinisl­and, Ballymurph­y and Mcgurk’s Bar were among those at the rally at Stormont. Sinn Fein charges. A detective constable told the court: “A woman known to the defendant outlined her concerns about him walking the streets in the early hours, looking for vulnerable women and requesting they have sex with him.

“That’s how he came into contact with these injured parties.”

The court heard the two women sustained bruising. According to police, MLA Gerry Kelly, who attended the protest, said: “People are angry about this. Some of these inquests have taken 45 years to get anywhere near the truth.

“They [families] want the truth and State forces acted with impunity. It’s a slap in the face to those who have lost loved ones.”

Last week, it emerged a public relatives of Kibar have been making arrangemen­ts to get him to either Denmark or Turkey if he is bailed.

Defence counsel Sean O’hare stressed consent would be an issue surroundin­g the alleged offences.

He added: “There’s CCTV footage from consultati­on into legacy issues including unsolved murders from the Troubles will include a controvers­ial suggestion of an amnesty for some perpetrato­rs.

Sinn Fein slammed the proposal, saying it

the defendant’s own apartment block that apparently shows the defendant and the injured parties going back.”

But the detective countered: “The injured parties would state they did go back to the apartment, but they certainly did not consent [to what happened].”

Opposing bail, Judge Fiona Bagnall said: “I think there’s a likelihood of re-offending and I think there’s likely to be a risk to the public as well.”

Kibar was remanded in custody to appear again next month.
