A PORN star who was branded a “homophobe” over her controversial tweets about gay actors has died.

August Ames, 23, is suspected of taking her own life on Wednesday, after police sources said there was no indication of foul play.

Days before her death, August was called homophobic after she pulled out of a film citing health concerns because her male co-star also took parts in gay porn.

On December 3, August wrote on Twitter: “Whichever (lady) performer is replacing me tomorrow, you’re shooting with a guy who has shot gay porn, just to let cha know. BS is all I can say.” She was then bombarded with criticism on Twitter.

One user, Eli Hunter, wrote: “It’s extremely unfair to be blacklisted because a ridiculous naive stigmatism created by unethical homophobes.” While Nick Capra said she “may be the stupidest woman I’ve come across in 15 years of this industry”.

Jaxton Wheeler posted that the “world is awaiting your apology or for you to swallow a cyanide pill”.

But on December 4, August replied: “I don’t have anything to apologize for! Apologizing for taking extra steps to ensure that my body stays safe?”

The Ventura County Medical Examiner has not yet given a cause of the death in Camarillo, California, but August’s friends are said to suspect suicide, as she was prone to depression. Her husband and director, Kevin Moore, said: “She was the kindest person I ever knew and meant the world to me.”

Ames was born Mercedes Grabowski in Nova Scotia, Canada, in 1994.

She joined the adult film industry in 2013 and made more than 270 films. She twice won an Adult Video News Award.
