I DESPISE MY SISTER’S FIANCÉ

-

Dear Coleen

My sister’s fiancé has such an overinflated opinion of himself and I really hate him for it. They’re getting married in the summer and I’m struggling to be enthusiastic about it.

I’m the maid of honour so I’m quite involved in the arrangements and I’ve had to deal with him quite a lot, which is painful.

He’s not like most men – he seems to have an opinion on everything from the bridesmaids’ dresses to the flower arrangements and so on.

I just want to tell him to back right off, but of course I don’t want to cause an argument and upset my sister, who means the world to me.

I wish I could be happy for the two of them, but how can I tell my sister that I can’t stand her husban- to-be?

Coleen says

Well, you can’t I’m afraid. You’ll just have to keep in mind that you’re doing all this for her and not for the guy she’s marring.

Ironically, weddings always cause discord and petty arguments – everyone has an opinion and people seem to get easily offended – but bite your tongue and remember why you’re doing it and that it’s only one day, and then it’s over.

Yes, he’s going to be your brothe- in-law, but you’re not going to be living with him – you’ll see him occasionally at family events and you can still spend time with your sister on her own.

And if in the future he says something you don’t agree with, then what’s stopping you from putting your opinion out there? I’m sure it’ll make for some very lively debates over Sunday dinner!
