GARY’S GONE FROM GLENS
on the back of growing fans’ unrest at recent results.
Friday night’s 2-1 defeat to Ards leaves the Glens facing a battle to secure a top-six finish in the Premiership.
Haveron is the fourth manager to depart the club in the past six years, following in the footsteps of Scott Young, Eddie Patterson and Alan Kernaghan.
Last night, the former Ballymena United midfielder said: “I don’t believe anyone could have worked harder – I thank the players and staff for their efforts. Things are still raw and I will take time to mull over the situation.”
The Glens will clarify their managerial situation today and may opt to appoint an interim coach to the end of the season, with former Portadown boss Ronnie Mcfall and ex-crusaders manager Roy Walker potential candidates.
On a more long-term basis, Ards boss Colin Nixon, Warrenpoint Town’s Matthew Tipton and Dungannon Swifts manager Rodney Mcaree (inset) are all likely to be on the Oval radar.
Confirming Haveron’s exit, a Glentoran statement read: “Since his appointment, Gary has shown unrelenting enthusiasm and commitment to the role and to securing a positive future for Glentoran.
“His work rate never wavered and he has been an outstanding ambassador for the club. We thank him for this and wish Gary every success for the future both inside and outside football.
“However, the board of directors reluctantly reached the conclusion that despite strong backing for Gary’s rebuilding plans in both the summer and January transfer windows, results and performances in recent months have shown little or no improvement on the same period last season.”
