Bitter rivals’ feud ends with a handshake

- BY DAVID MADDOCK

JOSE MOURINHO declared his war with Antonio Conte over.

The feud between the two outspoken managers (above) dominated the build-up to this vital top-four showdown.

But Mourinho insisted peace had broken out, when they embraced before and after the game, and even shared a joke in the technical area.

“The handshake doesn’t need any words. I think that’s what me and Antonio want to show to everyone,” he said.

“The handshake before and after the match is an example that you have to respect each other.

“Mourinho and Conte are not two ordinary people in football, we have a history and an image, and have to be happy with that.”

This was a huge win for the Manchester United manager, which puts his side back into second place, and gives them an important buffer over their rivals, who are now six points behind with 10 games left.

Romelu Lukaku said: “We had to work really hard, we were playing against a really good team. We prepared ourselves really well.

“We showed our mental strength. Going behind against a really good side is not always easy, but we managed to get control of the game.”

Scott Mctominay (left) gave another impressive display, and the 21-year-old said: “Being a young boy, you’re fearless. You just want to get on the pitch as much as you can, and prove to people you’re good enough. Today was a brilliant result for the team.”

Conte was magnanimous enough to brush aside the rivalry with Mourinho: “I think that you wanted to see the handshake and we did that at least. Stop. It’s over.”
