GAVIN WHYTE believes tomorrow’s European Championship under-21 clash with Spain will be a shop window to show off his talent.

The winger is loving his football with Irish League leaders Crusaders and has been in stunning form this season but dreams of making the grade across the water.

Having been recalled to the under-21 squad by boss Ian Baraclough, he is hoping for some game time against the best young players in La Liga, who will attract plenty of scouts to Shamrock Park in Portadown.

“As a kid I always wanted to play in England or Scotland and in full-time football,” said Whyte who has bagged 21 league goals this season.

“I’m happy playing my football at Crusaders because I’m enjoying it there, but I would like to get the chance to go across the water. I’ll keep working and try to get that opportunity.

“It’s a boost to be back in the under-21 squad and it is good to be involved in this game against Spain.

“There will probably be lots of scouts there and you never know who is watching.

“My first season with Crusaders was really good but I think this has been the best so far. I put it down to confidence. I’m training hard, am playing every week and want to score goals.”

Whyte points to Leeds and Northern Ireland ace Stuart Dallas as someone who has gone on to greater things after starring for Crues.

“I see a player like Stuart Dallas as an inspiration,” said 22-year-old.

“Everyone talks about Stuart at the Crues and what he has achieved.

“Some people have said to me that I could follow in his footsteps.

“He has been brilliant, going to Brentford and then he got his big move to Leeds, so that is inspiring.”
