Royal family top of spinning class

-

Say what you like about the royals but they’ve gone back to being masters of the art of PR.

Not since the Queen Mum was hailed The Saviour of Cockney Morale when she was chauffeured by day to the East End to do photo shoots during the Blitz, have they been so savvy.

Every time you switch on the TV there seems to be another fawning, Buckingham Palace-approved documentary. A couple of months back we had Coronation, where the Queen reminisced about her big day back in ’53, and a fortnight ago she was talking trees with David Attenborough.

This week saw a shameless puffpiece for Charles’ wife on ITV called The Real Camilla, in which her pal Gyles Brandreth grovelled: “She is not interested in position or status” but is simply a “very normal” person.

And then there was Monday’s royal birth. Although the baby was born at 11am it was announced just before the 1pm news, with the departure of mother and son from the hospital coming just before the 6pm news, ensuring they grabbed centre stage at the two most important junctures in the daily TV news cycle.

I’m grateful for their new-found PR genius becoming evident because it explains why Goldenballs and wife Posh Spice are now invited to every royal wedding.

As payback for lending them the Bend It Like Brand Beckham textbook.
