ON THIS DAY 70 YEARS AGO (1948)

After Britain’s 25-year mandate in Palestine, we revealed US President Truman officially recognised the new state of Israel under the provisiona­l government of David Ben-gurion. Egypt immediatel­y sent in troops.

61 YEARS AGO (1957)

Britain dropped its first hydrogen bomb in a series of tests in the Pacific. Built over two years by British scientists, it was equivalent to one million tons of TNT.

107 YEARS AGO (1911)

The Parliament Act was passed, establishi­ng authority of the House of Commons over the House of Lords. The Act abolished the Upper Chamber’s right to veto legislatio­n on fiscal matters. It also reduced the term of a parliament from seven years to five.
