Fisherman airlifted to hospital with deep gashes after being ‘bitten’ by dead shark

- BY ADAM ASPINALL

A FISHERMAN has suffered serious leg injuries after being savaged... by a dead shark.

Max Berryman’s flesh was ripped in six places when its razor sharp teeth sliced into him as it fell from a net it was caught in.

The 21-year-old was last night recovering in hospital after being winched to safety by a coastguard helicopter. But while his wounds will heal, his pride may not – as his mates continue to rib the hapless crewman.

A deckhand on a sister ship said: “The shark come over dead and has caught his leg which is very funny. The shark has come off the winch, fallen and dragged its teeth down his leg.

“The lads on his boat think it’s hilarious, he might be the only person in the world to have been bitten by a dead shark. It is the talk of the harbour, no one can believe it.”

Sean Smeadon, who was on the Govenek of

Ladram craft when

Max was hurt by the porbeagle shark, posted online: “Shark came over dead, mouth wide open, teeth out, hit his leg, then a girl scream

LOL.”

Max’s unfortunate incident happened more than 100 miles off the coast of Penzance, Cornwall. His 10-inch wound was dressed on board by fellow crew who then called for help.

Max was airlifted to the Royal Cornwall Hospital in Truro where it is understood he has had surgery and will remain for a few days before being allowed home to nearby Newlyn.

Coastguard Alex Grieg said: “I’ve never come across anything like this before.

“The casualty had four or five significant cuts below his knee. One was 10 inches in length. The cuts were down to the muscle.”

Porbeagle sharks are relatives of the killer Great White species.
