Two dead in fishing trip boat tragedy

- BY STEPHEN MAGUIRE

TWO people rescued after a fishing boat capsized have died in hospital.

The victims were a 16-year-old boy from the Derry area and a man in his 60s from Co Donegal.

A third man, who is in his 50s and also from Derry, was

last night understood to be in a stable condition in Altnagelvin Hospital.

The tragedy occurred off Malin Head in Donegal.

The 16-year-old, the first person to be rescued, passed away at Altnagelvin.

He was lifted by a local vessel and taken by the Rescue 118 helicopter to the hospital.

The second victim was pronounced dead at Letterkenny University Hospital.

However, the third person was not rescued until just before 6pm after he was spotted by another local fishing vessel.

It is understood the small boat left the area around midday, but a rescue operation was launched at around 4pm after tourists in a holiday cottage heard the group crying for help.

The search and rescue operation involved lifeboat crews from Lough Swilly RNLI, the Malin Head Coast Guard and the Coast Guard 118 helicopter.

Lough Swilly RNLI spokesman Joe Joyce said: “They were in the water a long time. The alarm was raised by people staying in a cottage just above the pier when they heard shouts for help.”

There is no indication yet as to what caused the fishing boat to capsize.
